I am a book worm all together, but right now my favorite has been the Harry Potter series. This is because I love fantacy and mystery and this series combines both.

I want to reread all the books sometime.

Post 3 by Jack Off Jill (why the hell am I posting in the first place?) on Saturday, 31-Aug-2013 19:29:02

I like them a lot, I still find myself picking them up.

Post 4 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 01-Sep-2013 19:45:31

it's a good series. It's creative enough to transcend its subject matter, and accessible to a very wide audience.

Post 5 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Sunday, 01-Sep-2013 20:01:06

I've reread the books several months ago, and enjoyed it the second go around, much more than the first. that's saying a lot, as I've always been a huge HP fan.

I read the books as they came out, then reread them all back to back a while ago. I enjoyed them at least as much the second time around, too.

Yeah, I reread them again about a month ago. I enjoyed them quite a bit. I'm still not a fan of the ending of the seventh book, but that's a pretty common gripe with the series. I also thought that the battle between Harry and Voldemort was a lot more anticlimactic than I remember it being when I originally read it.

Definitely a Potter fan. And while I think she did an admirable job of closing the series I do agree that the Harry'Voldemort battle was rather anticlimactic considering all that led up to it.

I've been reading a lot of Harry Potter fanfics lately. In my opinion some of the authors of those pieces do a much better job at wrapping up events in book 7. And there are others that take you through Harry's entire schooling career. I'm really into those right now. If you're not happy with how book 7 ended, give fanfics a try, some things will make more sense with a different perspective.

What site would you recommend for good fanfics? I've read some truly idiotic ones, which kinda put me off reading any more.

Post 11 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 03-Oct-2013 15:28:02

I used to go to www.fanfiction.net but lately I think the site's becoming less accessible.

Fanfiction is brilliant. If you want an entirely new perspective, Living with Danger by whydoyouneedtoknow (fanfiction.net) is a wonderful series, and completely transformed the HP universe for me.

Post 13 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Saturday, 28-Jun-2014 14:54:47

I did check out fanfiction.net, but my thing lately has been Animorphs stories. That was another series whose ending pissed me off immensely. But, back to the topic, I'll check that one out. It is true that a lot of the authors, if you can get past the atrocious grammar some of them use, are pretty good at wrapping things up and even putting new twists on events that only got a passing mention in the original series.

Post 14 by GreyWaves (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 28-Jun-2014 15:20:23

It's incredibly sad that few authors HAVE really good grammar on ff.net - I'm a complete perfectionist on that, and very hard to please. (LWD is part of a huge series which is still going on).

Post 15 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Saturday, 28-Jun-2014 18:49:18

Yeah, it really is. The story has to be extremely good for me not to give up on it if the person can't even string a sentence together properly. Bad spelling is another thing I don't like when it comes to writing. Can't these people use a spell checker? I realize that these things aren't meant to be professional, but it would at least make sense, if you're going to publish your work in any capacity, to make it look presentable.

Post 16 by GreyWaves (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 29-Jun-2014 6:44:49

Exactly! The thing that really makes me angry is if they don't put a punctuation mark before a quotation mark (after they speak). That's when I stop reading, in addition to spelling being bad or lack of fluidity.

I am definitely a Harry Potter fan, through and through. I have read most of the books countless ammounts of times, except for the seventh which may only have been 3 to 5 times, since it is the newest. I frequently re-read only certain scenes with all the books, especially for my fanfiction writing purposes. I use to be obsessed with Harry Potter when I was a teenager and will resist discussions about most other topics, only to discuss Harry Potter. My favorite character is Remus Lupin and then Sirius Black. I am fascinated by the marauders.

I must agree about the ending, if not to say that is an understatement. The seventh book is not my favorite book.

Post 18 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Sunday, 09-Nov-2014 21:37:53

The seventh book wasn't my favorite, either. That honor goes to the Goblet of Fire.
But the seventh book definitely wasn't my least favorite, either. I rather liked it up until the scene where Harry goes into the woods to face Voldemort. That's where it really fell apart for me.
My least favorite was the Chamber of Secrets. That's the book I've read the least amount of times in the series. I just can't get into a lot of the facets of that story.

Post 19 by Daenerys Targaryen (Enjoying Life) on Monday, 10-Nov-2014 7:24:55

I didn't really like the 7th book either or at least parts of it.

Post 20 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 10-Nov-2014 14:50:20

Fan Fiction has always been a gray area for me. On one hand it allows aspiring writers to practice the craft in established creations, and it allows fans of an intellectual property to mold the story to their liking. I think it's fine as long as you're not planning on selling it. And if you are, bloody well get the explicit permission of the author, because you are messing around with a world an author has taken a lot of time and effort to craft. As far as fan fiction having poor writing, I've read little and written less, so am not an authority. But as a fiction writer serious about their work, I would prefer to focus more on my own creations than those of others. I would hazard a guess I am not alone in this? Writing takes time, effort and dedication, both to come up with the idea and get it down properly in a manner that people will want to read. It's also something a lot of us have at least a fleeting hope of being paid for one day. Of course I could be completely wrong. I haven't read it, but the "The Hall of Elder's Crossing" which is being advertized on this site seems to be a pretty well-done exception. Apparently the author has even given permission, though I don't know how.

fanfiction is definitely a hilty pleasure of mine. I agree, I desire to become published and I deem original writing to be rather more important. Writing fanfictions is entertaining for me, hhowever, and I enjoy re-building the worlds. I am beginning to see the slight difficulty with my own fanfiction, as I study the true personality of the characters further, and thinking deeper about the world in general.

Yes, I have read the seventh book least however, not my least favorite. I am not particularly partial to the philosopher stone or Chamber of secrets either. They seem rather dull compared to the rest. My favorite book is prisoner of Azkaban, followed closely by order Of the phoenix.

Post 22 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Friday, 21-Nov-2014 2:02:59

I thought the Sorcerer's Stone was a really good start, actually, despite its much lighter and more child-friendly tone. Well, except for that bit at the end where Voldemort is revealed to be sticking out of Quirrell's head, I suppose that's not all that geared towards kids.
All in all, though, I rather liked it.

Post 23 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Sunday, 23-Nov-2014 23:49:08

It is certainly a fascinating beginning, however, it bores me to re-read, personally.

hahaha! that voldemort detail at the end was certainly rather more intense.

In ways, I think the Order of the Phoenix was my personal favorite of all the seven. It showed a deepening and maturing of Harry's character and personality. He's growing up, hitting the terrible teens, and dealing with the shit that comes with it. Plus, all the stuff that's going on around him. In the earlier books, my favorite scenes were the quiddich games. Just love the idea of flying around on a broomstick doing all those maneuvers. Made me wish it were all real for a little while.
